Home Retail Group backs the Campaign

Posted by jeannie on March 11, 2015

home-retail-group-all-logos.pngThe Home Retail Group swings in behind the campaign. As the UKs leading home and general merchandise retailer, this highly successful retail group has 1057 stores and £5.7 billion sales. In a statement it said:

"Home Retail Group (Argos, Habitat and Homebase stores) is pleased to support the Close the Door initiative. Acting responsibly is of course the right thing to do, but we believe it makes good business sense too. Driving down our carbon emissions, saving energy, building a great place to work in, and being a good neighbour in the communities in which we operate is intrinsic to our successful business. Close the Door sits squarely with this."

Westminster Social Policy Forum

Posted by jeannie on February 3, 2015

westminster_forum_2.gifClose the Door attended the Westminster Social Policy Forum today on the future for town centres: best practice, policy priorities and competing in the digital age. Fascinating ideas about how our towns will function and look in the (near) future, and excellent speakers - including Andy Godfrey of Alliance Boots and the Future High Street Forum who was so helpful in bringing Boots on board for the campaign. The high street is already changing as more sales go online and it's increasingly important to make town retail spaces attractive and easy to use, increasingly combining with click and collect/home delivery. Nothing that Close the Door does not sit excellently with.

Chris Wermann, Director of Corporate Affairs for the Home Retail Group was positive re the campaign, as was Doug Wilson, Head of Property Communications for Asda. Let's see who will back the campaign first. Watch this space.

Observer Magazine article

Lucy_Siegle.jpegExcellent article Is it ethical for shops to leave their doors open in winter? (gu.com/p/44kfx/tw) by Lucy Siegle.

'Retail is one of the biggest non-industrial sources of carbon emissions. It's time shopkeepers closed the gap'

The campaign is delighted as the word needs to get out to customers as well as retailers. With all good retailers ' the customer is never wrong' and a closed door in winter will quickly become common practice if customers close the door as they go - where possible, have a polite word with staff and insist the door is closed before they pay. First of all we need to get the issue out to everyone. Great thanks to Lucy Siegle, and also to Hannah Cooper for her part.
