GLA Air Quality initiative and Close the Door

Posted by admin on April 10, 2013

Close the Door has linked in with the GLA Air Quality initiative - with many thanks to Elliot Treharne - and will be developing work on this aspect in London, alongside continuing work on energy saving/achieving healthy working temperatures for staff. Air pollution is once again recognised as a serious long term health problem in London, and affects towns/cities across the UK. Recent research has come out of King's College London on the effect of this invisible issue on the street, and it is obvious that staff working all day in shops with open doors on streets where pollution levels are high are being put at risk.

Endorsement from Vince Cable

vince-cable-news.jpgVince Cable - Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and Lib Dem MP for Twickenham - has endorsed us, saying:

"This campaign highlights a business practice where an open door policy is operated on the high street irrespective of outside temperature. When heating or air conditioning is being used there are environmental consequences, and the cost of energy waste is added to the cost of trading. Close the Door have shown that thousands of retailers of all types and sizes are trading responsibly and successfully by simply closing the door when the heating or air conditioning is on."

New DECC report

eddavey.jpgEd Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change announced the launch of the DECC report, "Estimated impacts of energy and climate change policies on energy prices and bills"

Close the Door's reaction is that even with government policies in place, energy prices are going to rise dramatically over the next seven years to 2020. Here is further proof that retailers can not afford to go on literally wasting energy through an open door on their own or their customers behalf. For a review of the report and more reaction go to this E2B article.
